Overview
A brief silver city on Treasure Hill
Hamilton grew below the Treasure Hill silver discoveries in 1868. Some early arrivals sheltered in caves, giving the settlement the name Cave City before it was renamed for promoter W. H. Hamilton. By 1869 it was the first seat of newly created White Pine County.
The rush was intense and short. Ore bodies proved shallower than investors hoped, and a major fire destroyed the business district in 1873. A second fire burned the courthouse in 1885. Nevada’s historical marker links that fire to the loss of the county seat, while Wikipedia dates the formal transfer to Ely to 1887.

What remains at Hamilton
Nevada Magazine’s Spring/Summer 2026 account describes scattered buildings, brick ruins and antique mining equipment. It also identifies a later industrial shop left by a 1980s revival. These later remains belong to Hamilton’s story too. Do not mistake a roadside historical marker for the townsite itself.
